My Opinion: This is not free to the dealership or HD. It is a gamble they make and the fix it in their favor. They will make money on it and you, odds are, will not.
They can spread their risk over many many motorcycles and you are just one.
Send me the money and Ill take the bet for you.

Unless youre going through HD credit dont get gap from them. Gap from HD is like you said 410$. I gont mine from the credit union for 175$. It is in BOTH your interests to get the gap so dont let them steer you to theirs if you arent financing through HD motor credit.

Gap insuracne covers the gap between market value and what you actualy owe on the bike, should the bike be stolen or totaled this prevents you from still owing money after the insurance company cuts you the check. It is in the financial institutions best interest. HD charges so much because they get away with it. Kinda sneaky if ya ask me.

All very good opinions. Here's what I did. I got the 4 year warranty (four years total) and the wheel and tire coverage. I was financing the bike through HD Credit, and the difference in the payment was only a couple of bucks with the better interest rate due to purchasing the extended warranty. If I was going to pay cash, I wouldn't have gotten any additional warranty. As far as the wheel and tire coverage goes, my bike is only a few months old, and I've got a slow leak in the front tire. If I can ever find time to get it back to the dealer, they have to fix it or replace it under warranty. It's losing a couple of pounds per day, so it's not keeping me from riding. I wasn't offered a service plan, but wouldn't have purchased it anyway. After the first service, I'm going to do the rest myself.

I have just tried to find the blue book or Nada price on a 2006 my Road King. Not even listed yet! As for why, you do pose an intresting question, and I have never made more money on anything that I have bought with exception of my 1962 ****** CJ-5 Jeep. I bought that in parts for $200 and made over $600 off it in parts still. Everything else, I've lost money on. Maybe I should be buying more Jeeps?
