I used to split when I was in Cali... it was legal there. I do not remember the full way the law was written to allow it, but the intent is to allow AIR COOLED bikes to keep moving in a traffic jam to keep them from overheating. If I remember correctly, there was a max speed that a "splitter" could go. Any Cali LEO's here that can shed some light on the legality of splitting?

I am in Florida (Ok, supposed to be in FL...) and I am sure that it would be a beneficial lawfor Air Cooled bikes there.

I feel for the man's family.

There is nothing wrong with splitting lanes. To say that it is stupid is an uncalled for statement. Many people would say that riding motorcycles is stupid, but we do it.Accidents happen, it is a part of operating mechanical vehicles - motorcycles, cars, buses, trains, airplanes etc.

Although I'm not a LEO, there is no law regardinglane sharing (splitting). That's why it's legal. A cop can write tickets for any number of things related to it, but not for lane sharing itself. Common sense (remember that?) says to only do it when traffic is stopped, or very close to it, and then by moving at no more than 10-15 mph faster. I do it regularly, and save (relatively) huge amounts of time and stress.
