Ouch, condolences to his family. Can't even imagine somethin like that. After reading/rereading things like this about lane splitting, I'm kindo glad we're not allowed to do it in WI. Then again, when it's summer and I'm stuck in traffic I'm gonna be wishin it was legal for me to cruise down the breakdown lane so the bike don't overheat.
Wolf, danged if you do, danged if you don't.

That's a real narrow stretch of road there. He had no business splitting...
Still, very sad.
I have been through there many times and had to stop half way past a bigrig because there was no more room. The lanes are just not the standard 12' wide.
I still stand by it being safer to split when done with care, but you have to use proper judgement.
Being run over... damn that sucks.

Thats a shame....
I actually don't hear about many accidents attributed to lane spliting. I have seen some realy nasty crashes where the bike rearended a car or visa versa.
I hate when folks speed while doing it but honestly I don't see it from morning riders I see often. Today I watch a LEO do it...he was worse then then the GW I saw just a few days before...lol
There are times when I can see doing it and times when i don't...to each thier own...just be safe. (before anyone asks I'm still working on it...haven't had a need lately cause I have been sick and not really riding the last few weeks.

First off, condolences to his family and friends, I always hate to hear about a fellow biker going down.
I've ridden that two lane corridor many times and it sucks big time. It is always crowded with cagers jockeying for position and big rigs are always present. Without knowing all the fine details, it sounds like he used bad judgment. He had a large, wide touring bike (looked like a Gold Wing or Yamaha touring model) and Rhubarb is right, those lanes are really narrow. All these factors combined added up to this tragedy. Personally, I'll only lane split (Street Glide) if traffic is stopped and really backed up for a good distance, even then only when it's wide enough to do so. If the lanes narrow or there are two wide vehicles side-by-side in each lane, I chill. Better to get there a little late than never.
Anyway, this kind of story is a sad reminder of what can happen on a bike without 110% focus and good judgment.
