Default RE: The Wave

Here's my dilemma. I usually wave at everyone, but there have been times when I just can't take a hand off the grip to wave, such as in fairly heavy traffic or really windy conditions when a gust just happens to catch the bike just as the rider on the other side waves. So, what do I do? Do I just keep my eyes forward and pretend I don't see him or am too cool to wave? Do I make up for it when I pass the next rider and give it that extra effort? Or do I make a U-turn and try to find the other rider so I can wave and prove I'm not a snobby bitch who's too cool to wave, especially if the other bike isn't a Harley? Which reminds me, do I wave only at other Harley riders, other cruisers, cruisers and sportbikes, or do I also include scooters and mopeds? I'm so confused by the whole wave etiquette thing. It's enough to make me give up riding altogether!

As it turns out, I started the clenched fist in the air salutations, but it was really all by accident. I used to give the geek high hand wave at passing scooters and one day, someone suggested I start wearing gloves cause I would dump my scooter so often. I found a pair or gardeners gloves and was wearing them until I waved at a passing scooter. The wind ripped the glove off my hand and I had to go back and find it. This went on for a while until I figured I could just clench my fist to keep the glove on. It was shortly after that, I started seeing more and more riders giving the clenched fist salute. I tried to correct people that I knew, telling them, "no, no I was only trying to keep my glove on my hand", but it was just out of control.

In the UK we don't usually wave to each other as a rule. We tend to nod our heads instead as this keeps both hands in control. The only waves I use are the Bird, Two fingers or a fist at dumb car drivers.

Two fingers (Index & Middle) in the air with gusto means F**K OFF here but originates from medieval days when the French used to cut these fingers off our Archers so the onset of a battle would start with the archers waving these to fingers in the air to let the French know that the arrows are coming.
