Default US Ban on Motorcycle Checkpoints

I think this was brought up before on here but it didn't include the AMA link to send a letter supporting this. So here it is:

https://cqrcengage.com/amacycle/app/...JuBiU4CDQ&lp=0

I sent my letter. It's already banned in California. If there is no more funding for it, hopefully, it will be banned in other states also.

Didn't know those existed, must not have the in MN. Either that or I've been very lucky in the past decade or two. Must not be many of them if the AMA's claim of $500K per year for all sources of government funding are true. Be interesting to see if this proposed bill goes anywhere.

They still have what they call "Motorcycle Safety Enforcement Operations" here. Where they single out motorcycles in places where they are known to be. We had one last year around our area. I think it's how they circumvent the checkpoints, although they had to have SOMETHING to pull you over for. I think they had some checkpoints down in So. Cal. checking pipes, helmets, etc... Hopefully, if no funding is provided local governments will focus on more important things.

When we were moving a year ago we happen upon on of these "operations" it was crazy to see all the bikes pulled over with no reason. It just didn't make any logical sense, one could fight it on profiling alone. Hell of a waste of tax dollars.

Yup, and if we don't make our voices heard, they will just keep on doing it!

No they don't. It's against the law.

The law prohibiting those checkpoints went into effect on January 1, 2013. They cannot legally single out motorcycles for any type of inspection or checkpoint. If this was done after Jan 1, 2013, then contact ABATE of CA and let them know when and where, as the agency involved would be subject to a lawsuit.

Since they can't legally stop you for loud pipes or a non - DOT helmet you would have to have another violation or be breaking the law to be stopped.

Such as driving slightly over the speed limit, not signaling a lane change, or any number of relatively minor infractions that might otherwise go un-noticed, are now used as cause to make the stop for loud pipes, non DOT lids, etc. It's very easy to find cause to make a traffic stop if you simply shadow someone for a mile or so.
