Default High Seas Rally 2014: Thoughts?

The gal friend is trying to convince me to go on this. A few of her friends from the hood are attending. A little more $$ than a regular cruise (which I would not go on). Anyone been? Thoughts?

I'm going to be negative in this. A few years back the wife and I went from Baltimore to Bermuda. The food was OK. Nothing to brag about, but there was a lot. The swimming pools on board were filled with greasy water. (body oil) We did not use at all. And quite frankly I have pretty low standards. When we arrived there were lines to get off the ship. Lines to get on the bus for any tours. Waiting for the stragglers to get back to the bus from wherever.

Now having your bike there would help but do you have to jump through hoops to get insurance at each stop? That is another line.

Five days at sea with only a couple at port. Blah. Next time I jet down in three hours and spend six days on the beach. Rent a scooter to tour the island. They are cheap and all over.

The only cruise I will consider again would be an inland passage to Alaska. And at that my wife flies home after ten days and I rent a 650 KLR for another week.

BTW that ship that pulled into Hoboken last week with 25% of the passengers spurting out of both ends had a bike tour too. At least the news down here showed Harleys pulling up in the snow at the docks.

I have lots of friends that love to cruise. But I would rather just get there. Do you want to visit the island or visit the ship? That is the question.

Could not have said it better myself. Atlantis Resort is amazing and runs specials all the time, rent a scooter for the day and go explore Nassau, lots to see but not a lot of distance to cover, really a fun place and one of our favorite "runaway" long weekends for under $1,500 flying biz class...for everything except what you'll drop in the casino

The High Seas Rally is a charity cruise. They bring a group of Dialysis patients on the cruise and all of their medical equipment. They also raffle off a real nice custom bike and a bunch of other stuff, hence the reason for the higher cost.

A few years ago while we were in Cabo, I knew the High Seas Rally cruise was coming into port and that they would be partying at Cabo Wabo. The wife and I went and joined the party. Due to forum rules I cannot post most of the pics I took there, but suffice it to say it was hoot. When the place cleared out the cruise organizers came up to us and told us that they knew we weren't on the ship but wanted us to come on the next one. Between Sturgis and other vacations we never did the Hogs on the High Seas Cruise but it looked like a lot of fun.

Cruising itself is fairly enjoyable ( we've done four) and can be pretty cheap if you book it right. Doing eight days in the Eastern Caribbean with four ports this year with a balcony cabin for $650.00 each. That's less than $200.00 a day for your cabin your transportation and all your food. I wouldn't do it without a balcony though.

OK so I just checked their website and they have the Easter Caribbean HOHS cruise at $3242.00 for a balcony cabin. Yikes. Granted it's a nicer ship but that's $2,000 more than I'm paying for eight days with four ports. I would not pay that much for a cruise. I would do the one I'm doing and go to Sturgis with the money I saved.

You folks are missing the point of this cruise entirely...

It's for folks like me on kidney dialysis. For some, this is their only chance at some kind of vacation. The money collected for this gives a lucky few a 100% FREE cruise WITH dialysis paid for! This is an amazing thing!

It also is a cruise for bikers by bikers. You do NOT bring your ride with you.

Taken from their site: "Sorry, but on our Rally cruise, only participating vendors and bike builders can bring bikes on board FOR DISPLAY ONLY and listed below are just a few reasons why we feel the experience of riding YOUR bike a couple miles on a Caribbean Island is not worth the hassle and additional cost."

The WHOLE point of this is charity. Yes, it's a cruise to have fun, but it also so much more. They raffle off a Bike every year and I think this year there is 2 of them? Not sure. All the proceeds go to helping those of us on dialysis have some kind of "vacation" from the damn disease.

If you want more information or are just plain curious, please take a moment and read their website. This was started by Dean and Debbie. Just recently Dean lost Debbie to cancer so it's even more important for him to continue this. The dialysis fund is called Debbie's Dialysis Fund. Anyways here is thier website:
