I usually go in with the part number just to double-check them, but let them go through their own look-up routine. Over time, I've caught a few mistakes and figured out who knows their $#!& and who doesn't. I now only deal with the ones who know what they're doing. A couple guys couldn't find their own *** if you gave them a map and a flashlight. But a couple others completely understand what I need and always find something that'll work.

And I agree about the attitude. As an old service writer, I dealt with lots of shade tree mechanics who treated everybody in the service department like morons.......and never apologized when their BS self-diagnosis was proven completely wrong by the mechanics...even when we saved them money.
