I use Obenauf's on boots, belts and anything other than jackets. I'm sure it would work just as good on jackets but in the past I've used Lexol on the rare occasion I've actually cleaned/conditioned a jacket. I just ordered a Langlitz and will most likely use their conditioner on the jacket. Actually, I have a pretty stiff Wilson's jacket that I'm going to try the Obenauf's on and see how it works.

I've got a leather jacket that is over 20 years old and all I've ever put on it was some drippings from a couple hundred rare steaks and a few thousand long neck brews. I certainly don't want it to look new again. It took too long to create the fine character it finally has...

Not sure what you mean by "protect". The only way to guard against sun damage is to apply some UV protection. To soften and keep leather pliable, first dampen the leather thoroughly with 90% isopropyl alcohol. Do relatively small areas at a time. Then massage in vasoline using a little heat from a hairdryer to liquify the gel as you go. When finished allow to air dry on a hanger. Then wipe any excess with a clean towel. This method has also been used for years by antique car enthusiasts to restore leather seats to their almost new softness and pliability. Antique leather furniture dealers also use it. And so do many leather clothing shops. There are many products on the market that might work well. This one is easy, cheap, and very effective.
