Buying my husband a bike for Christmas
Hey there,
Total newbie from DFW, TX.
I am intending to buy my husband a 2014 Electra Glide Ultra Limited for Christmas. He has been frothing at the mouth over that bike for a long time now!
But, it's a SURPRISE! So, I'm on my own in handling the purchase. I've never bought a bike. HELP!
I have the financing, and the down payment figured out so he won't know. What's left is actually purchasing it, and getting insurance without tipping him off. He will be 100% stunned and shocked. As far as he knows I don't like bikes and don't want him to have one(part of the plan).
I know the exact bike he wants. The tag on it in the store is $29,600. He has test driven it(with me on the back - *complaining* about how loud it is LOL).
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dumb Question #1 - Do I just pay that price or do you bargain it down like you do a car? Or can I bargain for accessories at least?
Dumb Question #2 - What kind of cool upgrades can I toss at it that he would think are cool?

Fun Question - If your wife were buying you a surprise bike for Christmas... what is the most awesome way you can think of it being presented to you? Right now, I'm thinking of having my brother in law drive it over. But I kinda want it to be something totally awesome and that's kinda lame?

First of all your husband is a lucky man
As for paying the marked price, you can try to talk the down, have a number in your head and just start out and ask if you can get it out the door for $xxxxxx and see what they come back at. It doesn't hurt to ask. Maybe get a month of discounted parts purchases thrown in like 10% off parts for the next 30 days.
As for accessories let him going in and you two be a part of it after xmas.
As for delivering it, having it in the garage on xmas day, Most of the dealers in the DFW area will deliver.
Good Luck

Hi and welcome and are you not the special lady in someone's life, to answer 1st question I would take your friend that you were going to have ride the bike home for you with you to the dealer to help with any questions you may have, not saying you can't do it on your own you might just feel better having someone there to ask questions pertaining to the sale. Asking on this forum if you should pay full price, well you will get lot's of reply's on that. Whatever the outcome is don't feel you got ripped off because someone here's says you did. I'll let other members fill in the other Questions. Oh and Merry Xmas to you. Oh yeah as far as parts for the bike don't you think the bike is enough!

You are so cool! Post your questions in the touring section for better responses about the price and upgrades. I think having your brother-in-law drive it over like its his then after he gets tore up tell him! Merry Christmas!

I would be annoyed if my wife bought me a brand new bike. Part of the fun of buying a new bike or car or boat is checking the options and getting the one I want, not one one my wife thinks I want.
It would be a lot nicer if you just gave him a card or toy motorcycle that says you are OK with him buying a bike. Then plan it together and get the options, colors you both agree on.
Maybe I am weird, but that's what I think.
Now if some stranger spending his own money wants to buy me a bike, that would be fine.

If you can get some off the market price great, if not I wouldn't worry about it. You should get the discount he mentioned on parts, 10% to 15% off for 30 days.
The two of you should make it your own.
Have it delivered and hide it if possible? Than let him unwrap the Key.

Sunshine, you are one great wife.
I think it's a great idea and what a surprise!
You can negotiate the price and deals that a dealer will give you.
For an example, when I bought my '13 Electra Glide last year (not a left over, this was a 2013 only 3 months into the release of the '13 model year...
I got $2,000 off msrp
20% off all parts for 60 days, 10% off forever
1K service free
5k service free
Any piece of clothing I wanted off the rack, except for coats
Deals are there if your willing to stand firm and negotiate.
Have the dealer deliver the bike to a location where it will be safe for a few days.....family member or neighbors garage?
Get him a small gift to open Christmas morning, then say "xxxx asked us to come over to their house real quick to help bring her husbands gift into the house"
When you get there to help out, open the garage door and there's his new bike!
Good luck and welcome to the forum!
