The benifits of head work???
So I am planing on doing the heads this sumer. The mild build is a 107" 10.25-1 cr, 555 cams, woods lifters, Smith PR's, S&S rockers, 50mm SE TB, PV tuner, Fatcat exhaust, SE pump n plate, Hoban crank with H beams.
So if im not looking for peak #'s on a dyno sheet what are the drivability advantiges of doing the heads? Am I realy choking out my build by not doing the heads? I am putting away about $900 between now and summer for the heads but if im fine with how it runs am I really missing out? #'s aside am I really missing out how it will run on the road if I dont do the heads. Long term I would like to replace my tranny with a DD& and would like a shotgun shock as well. $$$ is a factor so I have to plan this crap years in advance. This is a daily comuter for me. When its down im on the bus. She has about 126k on her now and no plans to sell her.
If it matters the primary is the 2nd gen SE comp, Baker adjuster, 1 Piece IPB and SE pressure plate.
What would you do?

All the cams, pistons and whatever won't mean **** if you don't get the heads worked on. That's where a tremendous amount of power is found. Racers are always finding more power by new and improved head work. If it can't breath properly you'll never see the benefit of money spent. Your 107, and Harley's in general, are not high rpm motors but good head work will just make it perform much better. But if you're satisfied with how it runs after you install the cams etc., then don't bother. That's cool too.

If your looking to save the money keep the heads stock and do the 107 with woods 222 cam.. That setup may not be a race moter but it's going to give you a ton of torque down low and make for a great Street proformer

You're going to notice better throttle response, and better gas mileage, (if you keep the throttle from wrapping around the handlebars!), and even a cooler running motor as the airflow into the motor makes combustion more efficient. You will notice that the amount of twist on the throttle will be less to maintain the same speed. Call dave Mackie, here in so cal, He has forgotten more than most know about head porting, Good guy, too

If you don't know what good head work does... Oh wait are we talking about the same thing?
Seriously though; head work, intake, cams, displacement, compression, proper air/fuel mixture, exhaust all work in tandem together to produce power. All bogged down by it's weakest link in the chain.

I was told that if I was going for peak HP at higher RPMs to do head work. If I wanted a torque motor with shifts below 5k then head work would actually work against me. I opted for a low RPM torque motor. That said, It pulls like a **** up to 6500 RPM. My numbers are 96/114. Torque climbs fast.
Loose Stats - S&S 107 pistons, S&S cams - forget which, SE tuner/dyno, Supertrapp 2/1, SE AC.

Do the heads! You would be pissed if you did all the work and didn't get the done. Heads will get ported and milled for higher compression. Someone else posted that head will give you better fuel economy... nothing could be further from the truth. You will lose fuel economy but you will gain smile factor.
A friend just finished a heritage stage 4 build with S&S heads.. He can go 100 miles on a tank.... Yes the mileage sucks but he can blow past me like I was sitting at a stop sign and he's riding 2 up.
It's just ridiculous... The power the comes from head work cannot be replaced with displacement.
