Default why 5000 mile oil changes on the tranny?

Ok.....i will ask....at the risk of being ridiculed!

I am just curious...I am not trying to change the world. Why is the transmission oil changed at 5000 miles on a harley?

Intervals are a LOT longer on a car or truck for the transmission. Just curious.

I change mine at 10,000 .
I ask my Service Tec (my nephew) and was told 10,000 was fine .

It cost very little and can,t hurt ?

More revenue for the shop?

I just buy the oil and do it myself. I hit it every 6000 miles or every other oil change. The gear oil always looks nearly new when I change it.

i don't know about pre 07, but since then the tranny oil changes have been spec'd at 20,000 miles. i always did mine at 10k intervals cause it was easier to remember that way. if the odometer was on 5k, do engine and primary. if it was on 10k do all three. but i seriously doubt waiting for the full 20 would do any harm.

It's 5000 miles on my 97 Evo RK. I have the original owners manual.

Just a question that was in my mind...I mean I get the differences between a car and a bike when it comes to air cooled engine oil and wet clutches (primary oil)....but the gearbox seems to me to be the one item that would be very similar to an auto gearbox. Could be wrong....

Per my Service manual for my 2010 StreetGlide, transmission fluid change is at 10K intervals after the FIRST at 5K........has worked so far

But even 10,000 miles is way lower than the average car or truck manual transmission oil life. I am not saying you should not do it as per the manual...I am just asking WHY?

2013 SG, first tranny and primary fluid is changed at 1,000 miles and then the next is at 10,000 miles. I change all of my fluids every 5,000, just because.

Changing oil in all three every 5,000 miles is a little overkill .
But if it makes you feel better fine ?
I do my own service it is fun and cost a lot less then the dealer plus I know it,s right .
I change the motor oil and primary at 5,000 and trans at 10,000

After the first at 1000miles my service manual says change at 20,000. I think that's just fine.
