Anyone got any tips / tricks / kits for raking out a front end? I'm tryin to turn my 2013 Iron into a Dyna. This would be the perfect adjustment!!

..And before you say "why didnt you buy a Dyna..." I COULDN'T AFFORD ONE!

Years ago, they used to have raked trees. It's easier than cutting and welding. Whether or not they're still available or how safe they are, I don't know.

 

Yeah I did some Googling and it took me back a few years. found a few broken links and a old Sportster that got the kit.. humm.. " AME 9 Degree " is what popped up the most. and then some Chopper page that wanted $1,700 for a kit..

 

Raked trees are to correct the trail after taking the frame, so that the bike still handles tolerably well. Putting them on a stock rake frame will decrease trail, making the bike handle like crap. A true rake job is gonna involve cutting and rewelding your frame neck. If you just have to have the chopper look, try extended forks...or you could enjoy it until you can trade it in on what you really want.

I have a friend who has a wide glide that has one of these kits on it and IMHO it looks like S***, but to each his own.

 

Look at pickard trees...they increase rake and guarantee no wobble.

 

JD, I can appreciate your desire to modify your bike. Done quite a few myself over the years (some good, some not so good) and actually enjoy that part of it almost as much as riding. That being said, my suggestion to you is to drop that idea. I'm not real familiar with newer bikes, but that 883 Iron is a real nice bike. Appreciate it for what it is...a nice little hot rod for carving up the twisties with that classic Sportster styling. Raking the trees would take away one of your Sportster's greatest assets, the handling. And, no matter what you do to it, it will never be a Dyna.

If your heart is set on a Dyna, save the money that you would have otherwise spent on mods to your Iron, sell your Sporty in the spring and look for a lightly used Dyna. There's plenty of them out there. Good luck. Just MHO.
