What is the largest rear tire I can put on a 2000 softail standard w/o altering anything?

It's winter in upstate and i don't want to miss any riding days when the weather breaks.

Think I read a post a few weeks ago about some guys puttin a 180 rear tire on but it was close to the belt. About 2 charge cards thickness, it the tire went flat or blew Hold on.
