Default 2009 Road King Cop Bike

I am looking at buying a 2009 Road King Cop Bike, my first ever Harley. This bike has 7K miles on it and the Kelly Blue book retail price is 11.8K. The asking price is 13K. Is that a good price or should I try to stick around the Blue Book price? What should I look at or be aware of as I look at this bike? What are the advantages / disadvantages of used cop bikes? I would appreciate a little guidance. Thank you, Jim

bargain down. Don't pay above dealer blue book price.

7K miles on a 4-year old bike isn't bad mileage at all, but I'd not pay anywhere near what they're asking. I'd start well below KBB and work up from there. Use the KBB number as your top. Shop around and on the net to compare prices.

Cop bikes have completely different wiring setups which I've heard are a pain in the butt if you want to add/modify anything or have an issue. Other than that, the mechanics are mostly the same (I think).

When I was still doing police work, the motors we had were very well taken care of. If the PD they got the bike from was like the one I worked at, mechanically it's likely been pampered from a maintenance perspective. Not sure how hard it may have been ridden, ours were not ridden hard I don't think. Hence the low mileage.

Look up other threads here on cop bikes.....I know I've seen a few. You'll likely get way more insight.

Good luck with your decision.

2009 is the best year for a cop bike. No cat, new frame, 103, abs etc. I've had mine for 4 years now and no issues of any kind.

No problems with the one I ride. They are well maintained and ridden by professional riders..but..they are hammered 0-80 all day long. They also idle at crash scenes for extended periods. They are used in low speed cone patterns which is hard the clutch. FLHP's good bikes but beat on. Many agencies retire them at 5 years or 60,000 miles so 7K is low miles.

Daytona HD had some new '13 leftovers (Police Road Kings) for $13,900. About 5 moths ago they had some '12's and they sold for $12,500. Problem is Daytona adds bout $1,100 for dealer prep. Still a decent deal on a new RK though...As long as you don't have a trade. They offer stupid money on trades ($6,500 for my '05 FLHTCI).

You should be able to get 2 year old Police bikes for around 10K if you hunt around

Police/Fire/Shriner bikes are definitely nice to get your hands on...especially one w/low mileage. HD has infirmation on their site so you can do some reading here: http://www.harley-davidson.com/en_US...bmLocale=en_US. Is this a POV, dealer re-sale, or city auction? I'd say they need to come down a bit on the overall price, unless they can show some receipts for high-hitting upgrades (i.e. 120 cu/in motor, cams, etc.). Good luck!

I would want to know what agency had the bike and how it was used. A lot of police bikes (and cars) sit waiting for traffic violations then are gunned up to high rpms in pursuit. Also they are ridden a lot in stop and go traffic. The cars engines have many more miles on them then the odometer indicates from idling for hours on end at incident scenes and traffic enforcement use. The bikes not so much but still some city agency HDs get harder use than highway patrol bikes due to traffic situations.

A "Police" bike is not the same as a Shrine/Peace Officer/Firefighter edition. Totally different animal.
