The best is when you get behind a CHP bike. The lane widens like Moses parting the sea. There ended up 6 bikes following the CHP. He was going faster then I usually split but I kept up.

The officer deemed I was going "too fast", however the actual speed limit for splitting lanes is non existent., it is what the officer "deems safe."
I thought I read somewhere that is is no faster than 35 and no more than 10mph over the speed of traffic.
No hard rules because there is no law against it.
It falls under the discretion of the officer, but motorcops go FAST, and caged cops can't catch up anyhow.

Awhile back, before this thread began, I mentioned to a former LAPD motor officer that I heard it was legal to lane split in CA and he said it was not because it is illegal for two or more vehicles to share the same lane. I thought he was full of it but did not disagree because I was not sure. I do not live in CA but I cannot imagine that two motor officers never ride or stop side by side.

They don't consider splitting lanes to be sharing a lane.

Yup, i love following the motor cops. Those guys can ride!!! I usually can't keep up on my Sporty, much less my Ultra. My Ninja was a different story.
