Default Clutch and Brake levers....Whats the difference between years

I tried to search the site to see if the answer has already been posted and didn't find it.

The question. I found a set of levers that I'd really like on my bike. The possible issue is that they are labeled for Harley years '72 - '81. I have a 2012 Harley. Does anyone know what the actual difference is, and if there is truly a difference, can I modify the levers to fit?

I am surprised that in this day and age, they wouldn't make any lever style available for all years.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Pre 07 levers don't have the additional tab needed for the Clutch interlock switch if this tab is missing your bike will not start if the bike is not in neutral. the brake side is also different on 05 and earlier levers. but i can't remember what the other tabs are for.

Those old ones will have a different shape, won't fit. Newer ones are made more "ergonomic" and have a better leverage point, make the levers easier to pull.Plus the are narrower, hard on the fingers, compared to the new ones.
I bought chrome levers for my '06 off ebay, not expensive at all.

PB nailed it, but there is no way to have one part for all years. heck, i think even the seat retaining nut has changed a couple of times over the years.....

change is the only thing that is constant at least hd makes it fairly easy for us by keeping things in year ranges without a lot of 'one off' years. yes, they have them, but not as many as some car dealers

Thanks for all the replies...I didn't mean one single part for all model years...I meant one style available for all model years. As in cast the same lever style for fitment on different model years.

The one particular levers I am looking at are chrome with skulls on the end (go ahead and flame away if you must) that face outward to the sides as opposed to facing forward. I like the look of these facing out to the side better. Sucks for me I guess.

There are a ton of after market part manufacturers out there. Look around and I am sure you can find what you are looking for.
