Customer service?

RE: Customer service?
Guys, it's not that the dealer said NO, it's HOW he said NO that's the point.
My dealer would be happy to give me one - they always offer us two when we buy a bike, we send him business, and we've bought five new bikes from him in less than three years.
As far as how this dealer should have handled it, I'd have offered a new one for $10 (if I didn't just give him one!).It never ceases to amaze me how retailers will spend big dollars to attract new customers, but won't spend a dime to keep them. I was in retail management for over a dozen years, and always tried to take care of the customer like they were special. Always told my salespeople "If you take care of your customers, they'll take care of you!" and meant it.
If you treat a customer well, they'll tell an average of two people. If you treat them poorly, they'll tell 20. If this post costs that dealer a couple of TINY chrome sales, he lost out. And he could have avoided it by being polite - which is free. A simple "Sorry, but I can't do that. Tell you what I can do...." or even a polite "Sorry, only with a new bike." or "No, but we'll sell you a new one for $XX".

That's exactly what I was trying to get at. I sometimes don't put my meaning out there as clearly as you have. Thank you.

RE: Customer service?
No opinion about whether the shirt was asked to be free or not. Not the point.A person in a management position should have more tact than described. You would think after Katrina folks in the area would do almost anything to bring business back to the area. I have personally seen the results of Katrina in New Orleans and the lack of residents who have come back. Thanks for the heads up. I travel to the region often on business and try to frequent the HD dealerships in the areas I travelto purchase dealer shirts. I don't think I will stop by there for a shirt. Stick to your guns. If he was wrong he was wrong. It ain't about a free $10 - $15 shirt. It is the principle of it.

Ok,not that it matters what I say but I'll say it anyway.
Dealers probably get tired of being asked for free ****, so maybe thats why the owner sounded rude.
This whole matter could have been avoided if the damn shirt was just bought in the first place.

RE: Customer service?
Every HD dealer I've ever been in has a million t-shirts for sale, usually overpriced, with the dealership name on it. They make money off these as far as I can tell. Why the hell would someone expect to get a new one free? Should all customers expecta free new t-shirt every so often becasue they asked?
Me, I'm a loyal customer. Maybe I'll ask if the dealer will give methe new set a pipes Iwantfor free. What do you think?

RE: Customer service?
I probably could list a buncha y'all on here who have missed the point of this thread. No sense in it, tho. Surely doesn't seem to sink in that the offer was floated about buying the shirt if he coudn't get a freebie. Raggin' on him for bein' a mooch when he plainly said he'd ofbought the shirt if'n the clod of a sales manager wouldn't have been a jerk shows a lack of reading comprehension at best. Here 'tis all laid out in chronological order:
1) Can I gits a free shirt?
2) No, yer a jerk for even askin'.
3) Geewillakers, I'd buy one because I like to tell dudes where I bought my bike.
4) Buy a bike, or yer wastin' my time, jerk.
There it is. Ain't hard to understand that Dick wasn't tryin' to bankrupt the shop, or even unwilling to actually pay real money for a new t-shirt. Shoot, the sales-clod siphons big bucks to LA poly-ticks just to do business in the crookedest state west of the Big Muddy.
