In general, maybe. I benefit from the passing lamps + high beam, riding country roads. Helps see wildlife lurking in the ditches.

This question/topic comes up very often and there's no need to cut/splice any wires, or feed HD's money train by purchasing their $30 "in-line" wire adapter that simply swaps "two wires" on a HD touring w/fairing & passing/driving lights. Here's how easy it is and keep in mind...my bike's wired for "lights on w/high" so the photos show finished swap:

1. Locate front wiring harness under inner switch cowl. Best to have bike on stand w/wheels turned Left. It's the "outer" two wires (Orange/Red & Yellow).
Why do "passing lights" or side lights go off when Hi beam is used?-passwire-hd1.jpg
2. Use pin tool (like this example), or small wire (I used large paper clip) to release the wire catch.
Why do "passing lights" or side lights go off when Hi beam is used?-pin-removal.jpg
3. Swap Orange/Red & Yellow wires (i.e. "flip-flop") and the finished product/harness should look like this when plugged.

On my 2005 Springer that I had, I had a "push button" installed to my left hand side grip assembly. (bottom screw) This way I would by pass the on/off of the flood lights by using the HI Beams.

I ALWAYS run my HI Beams during the day and save the low beams for night riding.

Loved that set up, hell loved my ole springer even more!

Good information. Wish I had seen it before I spent that 30 bucks.

I do like the end result though. I don't do a lot of night riding but when i do it's nice to have those passing lamps on to show me the sides of the road when on the lookout for deer.

Its definitely a worthwhile mod, whether you have the dealer do it or do it yourself.

Harley makes a plug, very easy to install, for about $30.00. This will allow you to run passing lights when your headlight is on high or low beam. I installed this on my last two bikes and think it is great. More visible to traffic and more light for me at night.

^^^LOOK UP^^^

My post #22...why pay $30 when you can swap the "same two wires" in 5-min, or less for FREE...???

Turn passing lamps on,turn high beam on and off quickly. A slow moving car ahead thinks you're a cop, they pull over, you pass. [I wouldn't do this MYSELF,but I've seen it done...]
