Default Used speedometer

"Yesterday I was at the dealer and they had the new combo tach, speedo display. The parts guy said that on newer bikes the miles are stored in the ECM, not the speedo, so it is just plug and play. "

Can anyone confirm this? I found a used speedometer I want but don't want to buy if the mileage isn't correct.

It's easy putting in a new one but a used one will need about an hours worth of labor to match the speedo mileage to your ECM.

I can tell you for a fact that on the Ultra touring bikes that the mileage is NOT stored in the EMC and the only way to match you bike is to order new and the factory must reset it. Not sure on other models. No other way that I know.

I agree with Spider. Just replaced the speedo on my Father's 2005 883. Must've got some moisture in it so I replaced with new. The factory shipped it with the mileage I requested, 5,990 miles. That's why we went that route instead of used. Opened the old one up and there was rust spots on some of the soldered points. Kept blowing fuses.

Dealer or higher level. HD is pretty aggressive against odometer fraud. Basically, after 30-something miles the speedo is married/locked-in to that specific bike.

The problem is I cant buy it new because the one I want isn't sold anymore. I guess I will keep the old one for now.

If you're ride is old enough, this may not be an issue. The instruction manual for the speedo should explain the restrictions.
