Default Performance headlamp bulb

Does this bulb make enough of a difference to bother with?

Performance Headlamp Bulb

This Xenon gas filled replacement headlamp bulb lights the way with a whiter, more natural light. The coating on the lamp shows a slight blue tint to the oncoming traffic.

67074-02

Fits all models (except '02-later VRSCA, VRSCR and '04 VRSCB models) with replaceable headlamp bulb.

MSRP US $19.95

Thanks,
Joe

Too much money. J&P has a bulb that works great. I've been running it for about 1-1/2 years. It's called a German Rally bulb and is available in 3 configurations - 55 watt low/60 watt high (p/n 380-886 $15.99), 80/100 watt (p/n 380-887 $15.99), and 100/130 watt (p/n 380-885 $22.99). Mine is the 80/100 watt bulb. It lights up the night, but if aimed properly isn't too bad to oncoming traffic. I generally run the bright on in the day time, and it is very visible to the lame cagers. I'm sure it is available elsewhere for less money than J&P.

JIREH has a similar bulb, H-4 Xenon in a 100 watt high/90 watt low (p/n 6-66 $5.95).

Hey Skip,

Did you have to beef up your wiring to run that bulb, or was the stock stuff ok... also, do you happen to know if the stock wiring on my 05 Night train can handle the increased wattage? I could sure use a brighter bulb!

Thanks, man!

Cheers!

I just checked out J&P cycles site... I also second Clammy's quesiton. Since the standard bulb (and the "High performance") bulb are both only 55/60w did you have to do anything to run the P/N 380-887 80/100W? Great deal for 16 bucks.

I noticed that J&P also has a P/N 380-889 H4 60/55W draw bulb with output of 110/100w. This wouldn't require any more wattage (if you did have to change anything in your bike to run the stronger bulb). It's as strong as an HID bulb, but cheaper $43.99.

Thanks again,
Joe

I used the HD bulb, and am very happy with it. The higher wattage bulbs can cause wiring issues over time, and heat problems in the headlight bucket, if the units aren't designed to handle it. Also, they are not legal for road use, so if you have to get inspections done, that might be a consideration for you as well.

I hear ya, but I live out here in Berkley MA small town out in the country. We don't have many street lights at all!!!! In fact, the town only puts them up at significant intersections of which there aren't many. If you want a street light you have to pay (like $5 a month) for one. So I'm willing to take a chance with inspections and go with the 80/100 if it works without causing any wireing problems.

Anyone know for sure?

I have fixed many that installed the higher watts bulbs your stock system is not set up to handle the increased load. Now if you want to install heavy gauge wire and a new 3 prong connector go for you have the watts for it just not the wiring set up. Most times what I see is the bulb connector is melted badly and you end up having to cut it off and toss the bulb as well.

As for the blue bulbs I like the look but I thought that I could not see as far with them?? I have tried them in my pickup as well and thought the same thing. I found the ultra white was the best, just a off the shelf bulb. Unless you have the HID system like the ones from HD I would leave well enough alone. One thing you really should check is proper adjustment of light. Way too many dealers are skipping over this on the PDI. If you ride in the country I would not be afraid to get the lamp up a little bit. I used to adjust mine up a bit and it really helped, and use of high beam when ever you can. Being that I wrecked first of the year due to a city hole. I am always using high beam when I can, seems like there is more and more items on the rode .

Sorry to not let this post die, but one last question then if I don't want to replace the wires etc... But still want more light.

What about the this bulb from J&P? P/N 380-889 H4 60/55W draw bulb with output of 110/100w. If the requirements for this bulb are the 60/55W, is this okay? Or, if the output is equal to 110/100 would this create too much heat?

Maybe a dumb question to some, but I'm not a mechaninc, I'm a computer geak
