RE: Tail of the Dragon/Charahala skyway
Whatta coinkydink, the wife and I are planning on a trip to Gatlinburg leaving here 8/1. While there we're planning on riding the gap and tail doing a big circle from Gatlinburg through Deals gap, down the Tail, over through the Cherokee Reservation and back over the mountains to Gatlinburg. Looks to be about 180 miles so am planning an all day ride starting at the crack of dawn. Haven't really found a place to stay.Seems most are way over $100/night and I'm a tightwad looking for cheaper...lol. After 3 days we're riding across Tenn to Nashville, stay a night or two, then scooting back home.

We have a trip planned for the first week in May. Have a Chalet reserved in Gatlinburg for the week. We will ride the Dragon, but what I am really looking forward to is riding the Cherohala and other roads in the area.
Anyone know what the weather is usually like in early May?

I rode the Tail with my lovely bride a week before I left for Iraq. Killboy takes great shots. My wife ordered a coffe cup with our pic and mailed it to me over here for Father's Day. I daydream looking at it every morning. I cannot wait to get home..... anyway.......
I really think the ride to get there was more fun than the actual 11 miles. There was sooooooooo much traffic that it was a pain. Especially on the way down, I was stuck behind a motorhome.

I took the entire route from VA, down to Cherokee, NC, on Skyline Drive, then the entire Blue Ridge Parkway. Rode the Dragon mid-week the end of July. No traffic to speak of. I suggest mid-week to anyone on the Dragon. After the Dragon we rode the Cherohala Skyway.
I agree that the ride down was more exciting than the actual Dragon.
Take care over there in Baghdad, stay safe,

I did that ride last year and it was great. Thinking of going back the last weekend of August for the HOG Rally in Knoxville. That is where I stayed last year. Knoxville is just a hop to the skyway & dragon.
Or, do you think the Rally will overwhelm the Rides in the area??

Stash, I've been told to avoid the area during big car and bike gatherings. Way too much traffic. Our time is set due to the wife having to schedule vacation in January.
We're kind of leaning towards a bed n breakfast in Gatlinburg. Price is good and that way we get one home cooked meal and hot coffee in the A.M. (a must!! lol)

My wife and I and a few other friends are leaving Missouri on June 16th. We will take the scenic route and take our time, but will get to the Dragon around the 21st or so.
