Default Motorcycle noise enforcement

The city of Gatineau in Quebec has distributed sound testing equipment to their officers and given them training in sound testing. The police there are now enforcing the 100 dB noise limit - measured at exhaust output under full throttle. From the news reports a lot of other major cities are studying Gatineau processes and are in the process of formulating their own plans for noise enforcement. It will be interested to see how this plays out.

that sucks for you guys up north.

While 100db is loud, its not crazy loud.....a lawn mower is 100db in sound level, go to a town meeting and ask what they are going to do about lawn mowers breaking the sound limit!

100db at full throttle?

Our brand spanking new Honda Accord will break the 100db limit at full throttle! Mostly from engine noise!

Decided to Google this out of curiosity, and came up with a few random things:

This guy sounds like a big whino IMO. Harleys and their soon-to-be deaf riders. Haha.

Federal law states 80db, so it's a safe bet that a stock Harley is there or lower. SAE J1287 states 105db, but that's an engineering standard, not the law.

We are rapidly approaching the day that mufflers without the EPA stamp will get you a ticket.

A friend of mine had a db meter on his iPhone and a stock mufflered bagger was somewhere in the 70 db range. At that rate, it's not gonna take much to break 100 db with some quiet slip ons

It is my understanding in Long Beach California there testing noise sensors in some parts of the city, the police say it is to crack down on some vehicles that have large stereo systems and drivers that feel the need to turn them up BUT when I was watching the news report two rice rockets drove passed the sensor and it set it off. Now they haven't started ticketing as of yet but when they do I wont be going into LB on my bike.
