Route 66 trip
Hey guys, I'm doing a spur of the moment route 66 trip this week. I've heard the route isn't depicted on maps. Are there signs anywhere along the modern highway that show where you can get on/off 66? Any tips/suggestions? I'm heading out very short notice. Thanks

Get this book from Amazon. It gives complete coverage of RTE 66 plus other historic 2-lane blacktop route.

I wonder why Route 66 is more famous and well known, over the other highways and byways. Still traveling it would be pretty cool, if most of it's still in tact.

Route 66 was the most famous highway because it went all the way from coast to coast. It was heavily traveled for many years right up until the Interstate freeway system was built. During the depression it was THE route from Oklahoma to California for the dust bowl residents that wanted a better life in the land of Oceans and Oranges!

I've done this Chicago to LA. It is very hard to find the original road in most places. You didn't say where you are starting from. So it's hard to be more specific. We pre-routed the directions into a GPS (very time consuming) and generally found our way. Much of the old road is now frontage along the interstates.
