Advanced rider safety course
I am taking the advanced rider safety course Saturday morning. What will be expected of me in terms of drills and degree of difficulty?

My safety course was 2 days, 8 hrs each. The first day was mostly class, watching videos, taking tests and answering questions. We did get to go to the riding course for awhile.
The second day was testing our skills, starting, stopping, maneuvering around cones, weaving in and out of painted areas. Mostly at slow speeds, hardly ever above 20-25 mph. It was actually fun and a little challenging.
The bikes we had were all 250cc. If you've ever been on a bike, it's not that difficult. If it's your first time, it might be difficult but you can do it.

advanced rider course is going to expect that you have some semblance of knowledge or skill in the basics. More fast paced than the two day beginning rider course. Will concentrate primarily on "survival skill" manuevers.
1. listen to instructor with an open mind
2. do your best to replicate the manuver as required within the established parameters.
3. Don't fall down
4. pay attention: there is some good stuff in the course you can take home with you.

I took the Riders Edge Advanced Course a couple years ago. Don't worry, they start you out with easy manuevers before moving in to the harder stuff.
Have fun!

I used to take it every year. Here, it's $25 and 1 day using your own bike. I quit going a few years ago 'cause I didn't have any trouble doing any of the maneuvers and was starting to feel like a show off. It was always fun. I wanted to take it this year but it sells out so fast I missed it. The majority of classes are beginner classes and they also fill quickly. The police course is offered by a private company at a different location. It's a very expensive 3 week class and you can use your own bike or rent one. The first few days of practice are the MSF advanced class.
Oh yeah, back to the original question. You practice weaving through cones one handed, slow speed manuevers (easy once you get the hang of riding in the friction zone), emergency stopping, figure eights, & weaving and then stopping.

There were brand new riders there who bypassed the basic course and were using the advanced course as an easy way to get their certifications without having to go through the DMV. Pretty lame, if you ask me.
Hopefully, that's not the course you're taking.
