Default ABS brakes saved my *** last night...

Riding along on a 40mph surface street heading home at about 10p. 2 oncoming cars both pull into the left turn lane a bit ahead. The first car makes a U-turn in front of me. No problem. Plenty of room. 2nd car is rolling. I cover the brakes. 2nd car stops. I'm good, right?
Then... as though I'm invisible, he pulls out in front of me probably because he doesn't want to lose track of his friend. I hammer both brakes hard and chirp to a quick stop with ABS activating the whole way. Of course when the dummy realized what he did he just stopped in my path frozen, about 10 feet from my front fender.
I'm not sure this would've been the outcome without the ABS. The interesting thing: since I totaled my Ultra, I no longer get scared when this **** happens, I get really really pissed.

Glad you're ok. I like ABS also. In a panic situation, they work.

ABS is great for riding a public streets, but you still need to keep up on your braking skills. ABS is not meant to replace skills, it's meant to enhance your ability.

Glade you made a safe stop.

Shutty way find out the ABS works, but glad it turned out. Did you have a "conversation" with the dude in the car? It never ceases to amaze me at how many stupid people there are in this world..

I hate my ABS for the PITA it is whenever I want to mod something on the bike and have to work around it, BUT...I've had it activate a couple times in similar situations where it definitely saved me from a scrape.

I've been hit before, once very seriously that left me wheelchair bound for a few months, but I still try not to get pissed when someone does something stupid because they didn't "see" me. It just distracts me from the rest of the ride.

Yup, ABS is a game changer. I've had "release events" on both my FatBoyLo and Street Glide.

I love the abs system too. This is my first bike with it on. It's awesome.

And the definition of "game changer" is

"A study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) revealed that motorcycles equipped with antilock brakes are 37 percent less likely to be involved in a fatal crash than models without ABS. That is a tremendous risk reduction, with no compromise to the rider, beyond purchase price."

source: http://news.consumerreports.org/cars...ck-brakes.html

notice key words "tremendous risk reduction"

I'm still trying to decide if I like it. The statistics show it's better and safer, but for me it feels like I lose stopping time.
