Ear Plugs

RE: Ear Plugs
If I'm only going to be riding around town on surface roads, I don't wear any. If I'm going for a relatively short boot on the highway, I use reusables. If I'm going for a longer haul on the highway, I use Shure noise isolating in-ear monitors plugged into my MP3 player.
Cheers!

Absolutely had to with the Sporty...wind noise. But now with the new RKC, windshield and all, don't have to. Only have about 1/2 the wind noise.

I wear my reusable ear plugs anytime I think I'll be riding at speeds above 40 mph. The constant wind noise at higher speeds is really annoying and more importantly very damaging to your hearing over time.

Constant low level noise like wind, tires, and engine noise will eventually wear you out. It's tiring on the mind and body. Not to mention the long term damage to your ears. As we get older, we naturally lose our high frequency discrimination. No need to speed up the process. Hearing damage is collective. If you wait until you have loss or significant tinnitis, it's too late.
The key point with ear plugs is they have to fit properly. Custom made plugs are the best, but you do need to replace them every so often. Ear canals change shape just like the rest of us. Foam plugs are very good, but you need to try a few differant kinds until you find one that's comfortable. 32dB is considerably better than 31dB. Wear them one day and toss them out.
I wear ear plugs with any open vehicle; Harley, Cobra, snowmobile. When I was active duty, I wore them when driving almost any field vehicle; M925, Hummer, jeep, etc. During weapons training and practice (then and now), I wear foam plugs and mickey mouse ears.
I'm nearly 50 years old, I have a touch of tinnitis, but my hearing is still excellent.
