Ring gap hand matching question

Ring gap hand matching question
I got a pair of 107 cylinders sitting here, the spare 96 jugs are machined. I want to do my own ring gap matching, bought a little ring grinder from ebay. I have never done ring grinding, usually sent it to machine shop lol. When you measure ring gap, how far down do you place the ring in the cylinder? Please advice Thanks! Alex

about 1/4 of the way down the cylinder, you can use a piston to square the ring in the bore before measuring...be sure the rings are flat and square on the grinder before grinding....and go slow

Alex, You may want to check out

Am sure you know different pistons and applications (street, race) require different gaps as do different rings. Rings are relatively cheep so if you goof one up dont use it. Especially if the pistons are KBs!
I make sure my rings are clean and defect free and that your cyls are super clean and do not have any oil or assembly lube when you check the gaps. I know a guy who line them up and check all at once. I do them one at a time. Ring gaps to large that squirt suck! Gaps to small, well we all know about to small ;-)
Have fun with it and take your time.

Thanks guys! The link is awesome! Machine shop charges another $80 to match rings but I'd like to spend time and make it perfect.
BTW I bought this grinder, it should be square.

I'd like to add a question that I think would be worth asking here...
When measuring ring gap, are you guys using the cylinder torque plates? I know that there is at least a 0.001" difference when the cylinder is mounted, figured it would affect the measurement of the ring gap also. Anyone know for sure?
