The bike he passed in front of me (on the right) was the guys first real ride, second day of owning the bike. I haven't talked to the group leader yet we had to split up after this, but I'll find out what his take was.

I have fallen into formation with other riders, but I always stay in back and give them plenty of room.

My thought is this:

If he wanted to pass, it's his responsibility to pass safely and not yours to make it easy for him. The fact that some did move over is great but for him to pass on the right was foolhardy at the least. What if the lead rider had someone coming head on into his lane and he needed to dodge to the right? No way. So from a safety standpoint, I'd let him pass in the other lane at his own risk

I always move to the fog line (right)when I see a bike coming upbehind me. If he wants to pass on my left in the same lane, that's fine with me. If there's a lot of oncoming traffic, why make the dude follow slower bikes?

I've seen people get spooked by a rider showing up in close proximity. The street is not a racetrack and no one should be surprised by another rider suddenly crowding them.
Amen to that! Bad enough that cagers do it to other cagers. Why do motorcyclists have to follow suit? Be the better road-user!
