So I bought a 2006 Sportster the other day. I paid $3200 (even had the bill of sale at $3200) and when I went to pay the tax and title the DMV said I had to pay tax on $5100??? WTF??? why? Well the NADA was listed at $5100. I said Well I paid $3200 they said well you either need to find a value within 2k or get a signature from previous owner saying something is wrong with it. Then they tell me they have to base the tax off retail. Who the F pays retail? KBB doesnt list a private party only trade and retail. Anyway I found the KBB list at 4100 and they said if its with 1k they will let if go. WTF is wrong with these states trying to squeeze us?

That is bullchit. I'm glad Louisiana doesn't do that. All the used bikes/vehicles I have bought/sold we always put like $1000 on the bill of sale and the DMV doesn't even bat an eye. When I moved back to Louisiana from Texas I got screwed when I had to register my truck after my TX plates expired. I had to pay tax on the full value. IMO that was BS because I had already paid tax on it when I bought it new in TX. It amazes me how many times our government can tax a single dollar of ours.

Here in the State of Maine, when you buy a new vehicle, you pay tax on the MSRP and you gotta bring a copy of the window sticker or you can't get it registered. They wonder why they don.t get more new vehicle sales here. Go figure

I think your DMV needs to be audited by the Fed's...someone's "skimming" these vehicle sales and probably building a nice "nest egg."

When I was in Ohio, the BMV was doing this more than 20 years ago. They would ask you how much it was worth or what you could sell it for and if you were dumb enough to say something higher than what you paid for it, the would tax you at that value. I bought a POS truck off of a friend for $75. I told them it was worth $75 and held my ground. They actually look up my friend's phone #, called him and asked what I had paid for it. He told them he couldn't remember. He thinks he may have given it to me. BMV was not happy but had to tax only the $75. It's a BS money grab. It's worth what you paid for it and no more.

But look at what your taxes do for the state...better roads, police, schools...convinced yet? How about if you don't pay, you'll get the same thing Al Capone did.

When I bought my bike, since I bought it in a different tax area and registered it in another I ended up having to pay over $500 just for my plates. That did give me 18 months since I was within 6 months of my registration period (done by last names here) but still, I couldn't believe it.
