I get that checkup every year now. This past year I tell the Doc, "Just once I would like dinner and a movie first".
Good luck with your treatment.

I really hope your have a full and speedy recovery.
For years my Doc has been on my butt to get a colonoscopy but I just wasn't going to have anyone stick something where the sun don't shine so I refused. Then one day I was sittin in his office and I picked up a Time magazine that was laying on the table. In this issue was a story about Katie Couric and how she had a colonoscopy on national TV. This was just after her husband passed away from prostrate cancer. After reading this story I thought to myself that if this little gal can bare her soul and butt on national TV I sure as hell can do it in my doctors officer. When my Doc walked into the room I looked at him and said "Okay, lets schedule an appointment to get it done". He looked at me and asked me what the hell I was talking about. When I explained my decision and why I made it he about fell over.
Two weeks later I dropped trowel and had the dastardly deed done. In all honestly it wasn't bad at all, other then a little gas, so I thought no big deal. When he was done he told me that he found a bunch of precancerous polyps in there and I would have to got to a Butt specialist to have them removed.
A month later Ifasted for 48 hours and went to my scheduled appointment for the really big long hose exam. Lucky for me they semi-knock-you-out for this test. This Doc cut out the polyps and told me that if I would have waited another six months to a year I would have developed cancer.I now have this proceedure done to me every otheryear, and knock on wood, I'm polypand cancer free. For this reason whenever I see Katie on the tube I throw here a kiss and thank her for being tough enough to have this test done for herself and for me.
I strongly encourage all you guys to get a colonoscopy when your doctor suggests. It really doesn't hurt and all you do is fart afterwards and hell we all do that anyway so whats the big deal...

At age 42, I've already had 2 colonoscopies. If you are over due...Get it done, NOW. I wassound asleep bothtimes so you have no idea what's going on. No pain afterwards and great peace of mind. Honestly, the worst part (and most important) is the "prep"...Getting yourself all cleaned out.

From the other side of the coin.. Please guys, get it checked... the side effects from the treatments, specificallyExternal radiation & HRT,are beyond horrible to watch, I cannot imagine how it feels to Have this occur daily.
And then they say, "oh, well, I know this is your first check up... but I'm sorry there guy.. it's inoperable...but these treatments will help give you a few years..."
Hot flushes
Loss of bowel.. NO warning. NONE
Mood swings; from violent anger to tears in minutes
Muscle loss ( up to 30% in some men)
Depression
Impotence ( no, viagra etc doesn't always 'cure it')
Insomnia
Exhaustion
These residual effects can last for several years afterwards.... maybe you'll have them all in a day.... maybe some in a day.... maybe none inthis day, but maybe tomorrow. It's Bullshit Roulette. Wanna play?
Still think a little discomfort & embarassment isn't that important now?

Tripper,
I am pleasantly surprised by the positive response to my simple request. This outcome is very encouraging.

The Dr. Handshake is the least reliable method to catch early prostate cancer. No fun either first thing in the AM for the patient or the doc.
Best method to date is a simple and cheap blood test for elevated PSA. Gentleman .... know your PSA number. It can save your life.
At 49 I am a now nearly a 5 year "C" survivor. Caught at 45 with a high PSA and treatedsuccessfully (fingers crossed) with radiation seeded. Still on the bubble til year ten but looking good so far. Minimal side effects.
These days a PSA above 2.5 is suspicious, higher usually results in a biopsy. I am glad my D.O. did not follow the insurance company guidelines to test PSA at 50+ YO and ran mine at 45. Could have resulted in a much more difficultproblem with a 5 year ticking time bomb.
