rear brakes or not?

RE: rear brakes or not?
Definetly use both. Those that use rear only will have problems someday if they haven't already. People tend to "jump" on their rear brake in a panic situation. This will immediately put the rear tire into a skid. In a similar panic they take their foot off the rear brake and, because the rear now has regained traction, the rider will probably end up doinga high side, hitting the object they were trying to avoid or possibly end up laying the bike down (laying a bike down is an accident, not a maneuver).
In a stopping maneuver the weight of bike and rider shifts to, and almost on top of, the front wheel. Likewise it pulls weight away from the rear wheel. The front is where your stopping power is. The harder you brake with the front brake the more weight is put on the front tire. Likewise the less effectivethe friction of the rear tire.
Practice, practice

RE: rear brakes or not?
i always use both. just doesn't feel right only using the front brake. good friend of mine (who's on the big side ) uses his front brake almost exclusively, and he scares me sometimes with his looooong stopping distances.

RE: rear brakes or not?
Someone has forgot their MSF class. They teach you as a beginner to use both the front and rear evenly for a safer, more controlled stop. That doesn't mean apply equal pressure, that means to apply enough pressure to each brake so that the bike stays level.. doesn't nose dive or squat in the back. You apply pressure as required also... gradual slowing.. light pressure, or panic stop... hard pressure.

RE: rear brakes or not?
I would say about 85% of the time front break. Good thing about rear is its great for slow speeds and really controling the bike. Can do some wild manuvering using rear break and clutch. Check out "Ride Like A Pro" DVD that got me hhok on rear break useage. Otherwise I was like most and thought rear was only for emergancy or high speed
