RE: MMI/AMI
12Stones,
I really think what Marines (former/retired) have going for them is the devotion to what ever they are doing. Wouldn't matter if I was cleaning trash cans, they would be the cleanest, best smelling trash cans in the land, because of our devotion to a job well done, there is no other way.
It's something those that have not served will never know, but that is what we have to sell. What would IBM, Wal Mart, etc have to pay for you to go live in the desert for 7 months at a time(being shot at the whole while), or float around on a ship, or hang out on some island in the pacific, or just standing duty on X-Mas , it would be a lot more than the $37,000.00 the U.S. Govt pays me.
Gunny.

RE: MMI/AMI
I know this topic is old, but hey, I haven't been on this forum very long! I went to AMI (now called WyoTech) and MMI both.....I sell my school notes on eBay...
In my experience, they're both a huge waste of money! For what they charge, you can buy a bike, a manual and a set of tools and still have money left over!
The cost of the school is only part of it....you have to relocate and find housing etc while going to school.
I work for myself, but I stay in touch with guys that I went to school with and some of them aren't making $9 an hour!! What a joke!!
The so-called "placement" programs are BS too.
Just my opinion and maybe not worth much....but you got it!

I sure you know what ever you put into it is what you'll get out of it. As for relocation to find a job. I have a bud who retired from the service ten years ago. I asked him about moving all over the country to make top dollar as a journeyman electrician, he told me after 20 yrs in the service, where ever he laid his hat he was home.

I will be retiring from the Marine Corps in 2007, after 20 years (in ammo field). I would really like to spend the next 20-30 years doing what I like and am thinking about going to MMI and working at a dealership or independant shop in the South Caroliana area. Just wondering if any of you are MMI grads and working for a dealer and what your thoughts are. Also what kind of living, i.e. $$$ can one expect to make?

I'll be attending AMI in Janurary. Both are great schools, but AMI is just more convienent for me. The only way you can tell is by talkin to admission reps.

My nephew and another kid I knew were both going to college. I asked what they were majoring in and both had chosen Computer Science. I told them I hoped they were taking a minor they could fall back on. They both said they guidance counselors in high school and the equivalent in college had told them there would be 300,000 jobs available when they graduated. I asked them, "Did they also tell you there would be 700,000 people trying to get those 300,000 jobs? Or did they mention outsourcing to other countries for these Computer Science jobs?"
Last I heard both are doing minimum wage jobs because of not being able to find jobs in their field. Why?
1. No experience - And just how does one get experience if no one will give you a job?
2. Jobs outsourced
3. Contract labor

RE: MMI/AMI
send Shovelhead bob a PM he is retired Marine and a HD tech at a dealer, I'm sure he could give you all kinds of do's and don'ts. I went to a tech school for Automotive, when I started my first year was 30K, 9 years later my top year was 95K and lowest at about 75K, I usually figure about 85K is right, depending on business.

Unfortunately that isn't the case at these trade schools....I graduated at the top of my class....I put a lot of time and money into it.....I guess if you're talking about grades, you're right - you do get out of it what you put into it, but if you're talking about a career with an established dealership, etc., you will get out of it what THEY want you to get out of it! Like I said, one of the guys that I went to school with went straight to work for a dealership in New Jersey at the starting salary of a whopping $7.50 per hour (in 2003)!!
I took another route and work for myself. I also sell my school notes on CD on eBay, so that's helped me pay off my student loans, etc.

A member of our club, retired Air Force, intended to do the same thing. After he looked into it and talked to some dealers about the graduates, he backed away from it. The cost is very high and he didn't seem to be able to get confirmation the Govt. would approve it for reimbursement. Apparently, he was eligible for tuition support. The dealers he talked to were less than enthusiastic about hiring the grads. Just make sure you investigate it thoroughly.
