On dirt bikesitworks on off camber and slippery turns.
I found it better to just load the outside peg.

What do you mean by "reduced" speeds? I can do it all day long on the twisties and I can make much sharper and more controlled turns this way.
I know what you mean, and I do it as well. It really is hard to explain. I'll try it this way. I have a backrest on my bike. If I lean against the backrest through a series of turns, I'm one with the bike, and am leaning with it through the turns--but the turns are a bit "lazy," for want of a better word, and I might be more likely to take them a bit wide. If I want to make much sharper, smaller radius turns, I sit straight up, and (for a right turn, say) physically move the bike to the right.

What I think it happening (to somewhat muddy the issue) is that what we are doing when we do that is implementing counter-steering in a much more acute and forceful manner. Notice, too, that when you do that your head tends to stay up and remain perpendicular to the ground, not to the bike. Like a racer's head.

I don't do it all the time, but the faster I go and the tighter the turns the more likely I am to ride in this manner.

Works for me.

Philip
That's it Philip! You nailed it! Thank you!

I ride like that as well, but wasn't aware it wasn't something 'ordinary'...

I was taught counterbalancing on slow speed turns in the MSF class.

If you actually try to counter steer in a turn, that is, actually pushing the bars a little in the opposite direction of the turn, you can feel what DenimStreet is talking about. You will actually feel yourself coming more upright on the bike. I've been trying it a lot lately. You can take curves a lot faster and sharper, but the bike also leans a lot harder too. I think in an emergency situation (where you feel you might be taking a curve too fast), it's a good technique to know, and might someday actually save my butt.

at low speeds yeah great trechnique.better technique is toroll on the throttle in the middle of a turn right before your apex and leaning (counter steering) in to it at the same time this the safest turn and the one with the most traction and can actually give you faster turns. try it! works awesome.
