Thinking about buying a Harley but...
Every HD forum I am reading has people saying "buy the extended warranty" I have never purchased an extended warranty on any bike or anything I have purchased in 30 years nor have I seen so many indications to do so on those forums. In fact most people and consumer advocates say it's a waste of money. I agree. But many here seem to think it is a requirement on these bikes.
I thought HD was more reliable nowadays?

Your first post should be in new members, introducing yourself.
I bought an 03 FLHTCUI in January '11. I didn't buy an extended warranty, and 2 years, 17k miles, later, I have only done routine maintenance and tires. Very reliable. Much less problems than I had with my Vulcan 750.

Yeah Thanks I am a longtime member of many forums and I never read those introduction posts, Few do.
In any case I wonder because I do do searches and come up with many expousing the importance of buying an extended warranty on these bikes.
I plan on buying used, likely not from a dealer and I have always preferred Indy shops where the mechanics are available to talk to rather than a service "adviser" and don't want to be handcuffed to a dealer's service dept.

Only the people who have a bad experience take the time to get online and bitch about it, and a lot of those times it's people who don't understand basic motorcycle maintainence. Mine is a 2004 retired police bike with 40k+ miles, and aside from a few oil spots on occaision, I haven't had an issue. The bigger question is, is it better to get the extended warranty, or better to be prepared to wrench on your own machine to keep it in shape?

I don't buy the extended warranty either. The HD warranty is handled by an outside company that is licensed to use the Harley name. As warranty companies go they are pretty good but they are still there to make a profit. The dealer that sells you the warranty makes a profit on it, the finance manager makes money on it and what's left goes to the warranty company.
