RE: What kind of oil for primary...
I use 20w-50 synthetic engine oil, right now, Syn3, but thats because I have a coup;e of qts of it left over. When that is gone it will be Mobil1 V-twin 20w-50

was told to go with a little lighter weight oil. like 10/40. some say even fossil is fine for primary.
just had 1k done hd syn3 all holes. sporster I use amsoil 20/50 both holes. In the past amsoil 50/20 engine,90/75 trany,40/10 primary.I think synthetic may cause clutch to act up but just a hunch. synth in sporster has caused avery very little gasket leakage around bottom of engine/primary,no dripping and cleans off when washed witch is rarely cause hardley ride(back-up bike)3k on odometer.

Do not use syn oil for the primary. You would be throwing away money. Use whatever dyno oil is on sale- 5w30, 10w30,whatever.
ATF works fine and is helpful in determining if oil leaks are engine, primary or tranny.
The splash lube environment in the primary doesn't require a super special oil.
