It is also the examining body that certifies all vehicles as street legal in Germany. If you don't have TUeV, you're grounded. Yes, my friends, in most of Europe you can't just register and insure any old POS and drive around being a danger to others. Your vehicle has to pass a stringent mechanical and safety test to be legal (and you need it for your registration). Half the vehicles in any parking lot in the US would fail their standards.

I worked for Boge (Mannesmann Sachs) we produced the impact dampers which are monted on the bumpers of those german cars. A pain is the butt if you ask me (to put together the paperwork) but makes things much more agile in the shop-floor.
