Yes it is replaceable, but it has to be soldered in. And depending on if your unit is under warranty or not it can cost up to $180.

I can't for the life of me figure out why anyone would buy a lojack. They can be beaten by any thief that really wants to.

Provided they knew there was one and where to look for it.

Problem is, it's been documented that over 70% of bikes sold these days have them. You can only put it in so many places, and the numbers of bikes that are recovered are no where near the numbers of units that are sold. Once one person figures out how to beat it, it goes viral.

70% really? you'd have to show me this. esp. considering the coverage map posted earlier that showed how little of the country was even covered by lojack. add to that, out of all the people that i know that have bikes, i don't know 1 person who has lojack.

LoJack is a good theft recovery device if two conditions are met.
1) Your bike is stolen and remains in the area that LoJack has coverage of.
2) The theft is an impulse or opportunistic theft. An organized group or savvy thief could EASILY defeat it for about $100 worth of electronics.

A simple gps enabled cellphone wired and secreted into your bike will allow you or law enforcement to track your bike anywhere in North America provided there's cell coverage. Just pay the data plan for your hidden phone and you can query it's location from your own cellphone, no LoJack required.
