Default Anyone use the Dunlop D404 instead of the D402 or D401

I ran across this auction seller on Ebay and below is his write up about the tires. If what he say's is true the tires cost half as much as the tire with the Harley logo onthemand is indentical in every other way. Has anyone used these tires?? I stopped into my HD dealer yesterday and I was quoted over $525 for a new set of OEM HD Dunlop tires, tubes, and liners!!! I can get a new set of 4 tires on my truck for less than that. It's bad enough they rape you on the bike to begin with but to stick it to you for some tires is going overboard in my book.
THIS AUCTION IS FOR THE NEWD404 DUNLOP. THE D404IS A BRAND NEW TIRE INTRODUCED TO THE DUNLOP LINE UP. We listed the D401 & D402 in the title becuase this tire is thelower costalternative to paying big dollars for the Harley Tire. Same tread pattern. Doesnt not have Harley logo on the side.
If you currently have a Harley D402 or DunlopD401 on your bike, this Tire is the right choice. The tread Patter is identical to the Harley Dunlop D401& D402except your not paying to Have the Harley name on it.

That's pretty much what I understand. I'm sure the MOCO is getting some bucks for Dunlop using their logo, so the one without would tend to be cheaper plus they could sell it to other brands too. I'm sure you wouldn't want a HD tire on a cowasaki even if the name alone did bring the value of the ricer up.[sm=happybounce.gif]

I hear ya Bubba, it sounded reasonable to me. The tread pattern looks exactly the same. You can get a set for under $100. I think I'm going to try them out. I burn up a set per year and over $500 per set at HD is a little steep for my pocket book. I picked up some synthetic oil and a filter today and they hit me up for $50!! The bikes were lined up out the door waiting for an oil change at $80 a pop. I look at these guy's that don't change their own oil and wonder why. I guess they have an endless supply of money. MyBuddy's would laugh me off the road if I said I went and got a FUFU oil change for $80.All you have to do is warm it up and take out the drain plug, screw on a new filter and add oil.[/align]

I guess I should have done a search on here first. I found this link on the 404 vs. the 402

I have one sitting in my living room. It looks the sme to me. I hate the dunlops anyway, but I'll bet the 404 feels no different than the 401 or 402...

I never had any problems with Dunlop tires I run GT-501, most likely the best cornering and rain tire I ever used, I'll use them until something better comes alone.

Is Dunlop not making the 49x tires any more? They used to be what I'd call the same as the HD branded 40x series. I most always ran them and would get 10,000 or better on the rear, and over 20,000 on the front. Cost was generally less than $100 per compared to $150 per for the HD branded tire. When I looked in a couple catalogs recently the 49x series wasn't listed.

BTW, listen to Bill about the 404 mileage. I've met several folks who bought 'em and all reported about half the mileage compared tothe 40x and 49x series.

To answer my own question: Yes Skip, Dunlop still makes the K491 tires. If any of y'all are looking for the same tread design as the HD branded stuff, check these out. As I said above, I've used them for years and have always been satisfied with them.

Here's some of the specs:491 Elite II
Front - MT90B16 3.00 rim, 25.00 diam., 5.10 width, 6/32 tread depth, 770# load
Front - 150/80-16 3.50 rim, 26.98 diam., 5.90 width, 6/32 tread, 770# load

Rear - MT90B16 3.00 rim, 25.70 diam., 5.20 width, 10/32 tread depth, 830# load
Rear - MU90B16 3.00 rim, 25.72 diam., 5.57 width, 11/32 tread depth, 930# load

I have answered this before, but here you go.

Had a 404 on the rear of the wife's Heritage Classic. Got 5,000 miles out of it when she normally gets 11,000 to 12,000 miles out of a back tire.

404 load rating 677 lbs. 401 load rating 805 lbs. 402 load rating 827 lbs.

404's are inferior and you will get just what you pay for.

Regards,

Bill

pococj,

That is why I run with the GT-501, I get 10,000 + but I don'tstrech it much, I like good rubber under me, and as I said great tread design.
