Maybe it is in my head but my H-D hemet is the most comfortable oneI have tried on. It wasn't cheap, color matched to the bike (I was feelin pretty vain that day) and appears to be a quality unit. My feeling is if it is comfortable, I'll wear it. I am in a helmet state but minutes away from a free to choose state and I keep it on.

Theoretically the helmet has a useful life of 5 years and then it is reccommende to replace it. So at $100 per year a $500 helmet might be justifable

I spend around $400-$500. Arai or Shoei ff only. I figure it's my head, I like it. I want it to be safe and comfortable and happy
Same here. I have a Shoei and my wife has an Arai...just personal fit and preference...you are paying for quality and weight (or lack thereof, lightweight materials cost more).

My HJC 3/4 is DOT and Snell certified. ~$125.
Good fit, good ventilation.

Another up and commer in the helmet world is Scorpion Helmets. Check them out www.scorpionusa.com

Not only DOTapproved but Snell certified as well. These guys have been rated #2 or #3 in all the surveys sandwiched between Shoei and Arai. With pricing that is hard to beat.

Worth the look see. Ihave an exo200 on order, an open face helmet.

They have a new one coming out sometime in '07 the exo100 looks like a half helmet but it has a pulldown tinted visor that is within the shell of the helmet.

i've seen harley dealers selling hci helmets for 3 or 4 times what i've seen them for online.spend what you want, get the helmet you want, but it wouldn't hurt to shop around.

Since people are bringing up SNELL certification I though I would point you to this article;
http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/ge...iew/index.html

The gist of the article is that SNELL/DOT helmets are less safe than DOT only helmets.

I'm in the market for a modular (a flip up full face), but have a hard time prying the checkbook open for a helmet that costs over 2 hundred bucks. There's a lot of nice, comfortable full-face helmets out there for under two bills. My current full-face got one of the highest safety and quality ratings in a helmet test done by Motorcyclist magazine and cost 126 dollars including tax.
You should look into the Nolan modular helmets. I believe you can get them for under $200 and they're very good helmets.
Here is the 2004 modular helmet comparison from Motorcycle Consumer News

Thanks. I may have to start subscribing to MCN again.

I am not afraid to spend the bucks for a helmet, I have purchased $50 and $200 helmets. Sometimes you look at a price on some items and just say wow!
