RE: What is your price range for a helmet?
Wife and I both have HD half helmets. Probably need to wear them more than we do. Don't really know how they stack up against other brands but they are DOT approved. Mine was $125.00 and I think hers was more like $150.00.

I also go for comfort over $$$...and try to find a happy medium...it just seems that the most comfortable lids that fit me fall in the $400 and higher range. But I figure thats still pretty cheap, it just part of the operating expense.

I wear a DOT Shorty from Daytona Helmets. Its the smallest lightest helmet that passes the DOT testing, its built just as well as the Harley helmets at half the price.

The other difference with the very expensive helmets...they tend to be lighter with more ventilation options. They also tend to have removeable liners (for washing). Both my Aria and Shoei have removable check pads so I can make the fit just right with different size pads.
But agree, the level of protection is not hundreds more....the extra is for comfort

I have helmets in all price ranges. My Arai is about $500, my half helmet about $100, and my novelty helmet $20. How much is your head worth? You have a $20000 bike right? What is another $500 for a helmt that may keep you alive in case of a crash?

I'm in the market for a modular (a flip up full face), but have a hard time prying the checkbook open for a helmet that costs over 2 hundred bucks. There's a lot of nice, comfortable full-face helmets out there for under two bills. My current full-face got one of the highest safety and quality ratings in a helmet test done by Motorcyclist magazine and cost 126 dollars including tax.

I wouldn't have a problem paying $100 to $400 for a helmet. The more expensive helmets wont necessarilly protect you anymore but they tend to have a higher fit and finish and are more comfortable.

I also find that it pays off to go into a shop and find the size that fits you best in the brand you are going to purchase, and tehn order over then net once you know the size. I don't guess on comfort. I also find that it is important that a helmet feel comfortable at speed on a bike. The freeway is where I really notice this. I'd rather spend a little more and be cmfortable, than saving and being uncomfortable...
