Time to divert from stock...

Know what you want before you start, you'll save a bucket full of $$$$. As you know, nothing good is cheap. I would fix HD's flaws first, suspension, exhaust, etc. Then go for making it whatever you hanker for. I'd go to the dealer and look a Drag Specialties for most good parts...the parts guys SHOULD know what will fit but Drag will know. If you bought the bike there you should get a discount on parts. Then either buy them there or shop around and you'll already know what really fits your bike. Atleast that's what I did and I didn't have to return parts or wait on out of stock stuff.

Want to save alot of money? just sit on your bike, look forward, then customise everything you can see from the seat. Or are you going to pull up a chair and just stare at you bike when it's parked?

Theme for your bike.....
Bro, I know where you are at. This is my 11th motorcycle, and 6th Harley. Each bike ended up looking different from the dealer's floor.
Buy all the major biker mags. Look at bikes like yours. Tear out the pics of bikes like yours that have the "Look" you like. Put them in a scrapbook. Get a copy of the HD Parts & Accessories catalog, and the Drag Specialties catalog, and the J & P catalog.
You will inevitably form some opinion about what looks "GOOD" to you, and what doesn't. Keep that forum going in your head. YOU KNOW what YOU want YOUR bike to look like..... If you don't know NOW, don't worry, it will come together for you.
Some like Chrome, some like Blackened out everything, some like a mix. some like a subdued look, others a really in-your-face-smack-down thing.
You gotta' feel in your soul what you want your bike to look like.
Good Luck with your customization, and show us some pics when you get your ride tricked-out-
