Changing the oil too frequently?
#32
I was always a 2500 mile change type of driver/rider. Since I switched to syn on the bike I've adjusted the interval to 5000 miles. My car came from the factory with syn and the owners manual recommends 7500 mile intervals.
You will never hurt an engine by changing the oil too soon.
I don't need a shower everyday but I run much better with one.

Had oil analyzed at my first change last year when I got the bike - had 7200 miles on it. Was all good. Had it tested this summer at the 15k mark. Report still showed breaking in!!!! WTF...I do ride pretty easy Most of the time.
Called redline...they recommend 5-7500 oil, 10000 primary, and 20k trans. I usually do 5k oil, 5k primary and 10k trans.

Then again, you must remember that Harley also sells new motorcycles. It's not really in their best interest that your motorcycle last forever. If it did, how could they sell you a new one?
Oil doesn't just lubricate, it also carries and holds in suspension by-products of combustion, such as carbon particles, moisture and acids, as well as fine metal particles and silica from dust ingested by the engine. There is no way to get rid of these substances except to change the oil.

20 oil changes @ every 5000 miles
13 oil changes @ every 7500 miles
So it will cost you about ~$700 extra over the first 100,000 (every 5000 vs every 75000) to change the oil more frequently than the car and oil manufacturers recommend. On top of this is the fact the transmission or other expensive component of the car failing or severe rust in northern climates, and not the engine rings, is what send most cars to the scrap yard. Don't get the logic.

I change my bike every 3-4000 miles and use semi-synthetic. Is that too often? Maybe, but I've never had an engine wear out because I changed it too often. 07 Roadglide with 44K.

Appreciate the information and your opinion. I also appreciate that it is my money and I choose to do things to the positive side of excess with my mechanical toys. The logic is that my opinion is mine and I am right. I believe I am right. If I believe that I am right than that makes your opinion in my opinion less than right.
33 oil changes over the life of the bike if you change every 3000 miles.

Just because you do, doesn't mean we all do. Mine is only 19 years old, and I have no plans to sell it.
