stupid question alert. clutch and shifting
#13
Another thing I heard a long while back which I now do as a habit whether I'm starting from neutral or in gear, is give the clutch two or three squeezes before hitting the starter. I was told this squeezes some of the oil out from between the plates, which, when cold, is what produces the drag you are experiencing. Wet clutches are all pretty much the same, so I expect it works this way on other bikes, too. And I always start with clutch pulled in, even in neutral.

My easy way, bike in neutral, engage clutch just out of habit, let clutch out, start bike, put helmet and gloves on, upright bike, stand up, engage clutch, put in gear, ride on.

My clutch is in good shape and adjusted perfectly (I even know my clutch plates are flat and not warped since I just went thru primary at 40K-- plate were within .001 of new) The primary oil level is correct to level, not amount, and correct harley spec. If I leave it in gear and just pull in clutch, you can here it pull down (slow starter) and fill it tug bike. Thats just the nature of the beast. Until they are spinning, the drive disks stick to the driven disks.

Well it looks like your questions are answered other than the warm up one.
All oil is too thick at room temp. So yes letting the bike warm up is a good idea. In the summer I let my bike run for a couple minutes before I take off. And be easy on the gas for the first 5 minutes. 5 minutes riding and my oil cooler is hot as hell so I'm guessing it's up to operating temp, then go ahead and twist er
