So a buddy of mine has either found a steal of a bike deal or a problem. He checked the VIN's and the are not a match.

The last 7 numbers/letters match up but not the full vin.

He asked me about how Harley does vin to motor... Oddly it is something I have never thought of.

Any insight?

IIRC the VIN on the motor isn't a full vin...it is only a partial.

 

As long as the last 6 numbers match it's cool. The engine VIN is an abbreviated VIN.

 

Everything on the motor VIN (letters & numbers) is stamped into the neck VIN, but not the entire VIN is on the motor.

 

Sounds like good news for your buddy.
