We encounter snakes on the road from time to time, but I've never seen one coiled to strike: all of ours just want t get the hell off the road. I'll bet that was fun for you!

If you're moving at a decent clip I can't imagine the snake being able to time it's strike in time to nail you. But this is something I'd rather leave to theory and not find out for myself!

In my mountainbiking days we ran into rattlers in the trail quite frequently and we weren't doing 60 mph, you just rode around them. Even been chased down the trail at a pretty good clip by a wild mustang most likely because we got too close to his mares, bastard even tried to kick me.

I have had the same experience on my roadbike on the bike trail with snakes when the weather is warm. A couple weeks ago I had a baby snake and a scorpion in my living room. That was a shock...

I was leading a ride in Aug, going up lookout Mt. I saw what I thought was a limb in the road and gave a signal. When we stopped for gas I found out it was a copperhead. I had the bike pretty well leaned over in his direction too!

Only "danger" is to the snake. This one was just fine after I picked him up and put him in the grass on the other side of the road.

We were probably going 35. I'd guess it didn't actually hit any bikes, or I think that would have been its last one. I didn't even realize it was striking, but I could see it was ready. The woman in front of me said she saw it strike at her bike and the guy behind me saiod it struck at mine.

The closest picture I can find to how it was coiled is this - it's body was actually behind it, but its head was up about this high. It looked like it had been crossing the road and somebody got close and scared it.
