Hello all! New here, and looking for sound advice! I'm approaching the big 4-0 next month. I've always wanted to ride and plan on taking the safety course soon. I've never rode before (except dirt bikes as a youngin') but I've always had a hard on for a Harley! Apon completion of the course, I'll be looking to purchase my first bike. I have fell in love with the fatboy lo and the new softail slim. My question is, are those too much bike for a beginner? Because I just can't bring myself to buy anything else. This may be a once in a lifetime chance to do it right...the first time! Lol. Any input will be greatly appreciated! Thanks to all!

you'll be fine, buy the one you want and just get used to to it first, do the safety course first and ride, its just a matter of getting familiar with the bike. it won't be too big

Most MSF courses seem to supply little bikes (think Honda Rebel 250). It'll be a big change riding a bigger bike, but I wouldn't expect those choices to be too overwhelming. Take the course, get the bike you want and take it slow and practice somewhere safe (not out in traffic near the shopping mall on a Saturday if you get my drift). You'll get up to speed quickly.

Option B would be to purchase a cheap, used starter bike. My wife and I both shared a Honda Rebel when we were learning to ride. We had it about 6 months before she moved onto a Shadow 750 and I onto a VTX 1800 (one of the most top heavy and powerful cruisers out there). The first few times out on the VTX were a little interesting, but the dynamics of a big bike vs. a little bike aren't much different.

How about a little information about yourself. All Harleys are too big for an 85lb 4'0" girl in poor health to start on. Most Harleys will feel small to a 300lb 7'4" gorilla in perfect health.

Do the safety course, get your license, then rent one or do a demo ride. Decide from there. Lots of guys start out on a softail (and stay there - nice bikes)
