Default 103 with 254E cams

Just bought a nearly new '08 FXDF (4000 miles) with SE 103 kit, including 254E cams and a dealer re-flash; a torque package I guess (not my 103 FXDXT for sure). Anyone have any comments on these cams? Read the SE literature; would I benefit from a dyno tune/re-map? I'm coming from a carb; does HD make a tuner that can be re-programmed on the dyno? Bike also has a V&H 2-1... I also notice the motor puts out more heat than my FXDXT did....will a proper dyno tune remedy that??? I know there is a ton of stuff on here about tuners, but it's my first EFI bike and I'd like to stay with HD parts if I can.

This a great setup. Cams are improved from se255 and hold the torque curve a little longer in the the upper rpm. You can do a Power Vision tuner or Thundermax or others for dyno tuning. I drove one of these builds my dealer had done with a SERT and it rocked.

This is what "Doc" Weaver of Docs Performance Tuning in Minneola Florida said about them;

"... 254e cam is a nice drop in cam. It isn't a neck jerker or an arm stretcher but it runs very smooth with a great looking torque curve. I have used a couple of them in bikes with head work and 10.1 compression (.030 head gasket) and they performed flawless. I highly recommend this cam for the one who likes a smooth pulling engine that runs cool and like a Swiss Watch with a good tune."

I'd wager to say he's the best tuner on the east coast, and one of the best in the United States.

With just a dealer flash, you're not going to get the benefits of a full on custom tune. Gas milage will improve and so will the heating. Not to mention the fun factor.

recommend 254e. I would also recommend "perfect fit" push rods - works well with these cams.

Who else is running these 254e cams?
I had a set installed i n my 2013 streetglide when I purchased it new and they are just fine but thinking about installing a 107 kit or bumping and bumping up the compression to with 10:1 pistons.

Has anyone run them with a pair of rocker stilts?
Where would that put their total lift? .580 or so?

I'm running 254e cams in my RoadKing. Was gonna do 255s, but heard there was more heat, some hot start kickback issues, and they petered out early on. Also heard you might hafta install ACRs.

The 254's, with SE pipes & A/c, and a dyno tune with a SEST made my bike wake up & more fun to ride than ever, and quick like a raped ape with a bent banana! Great idle & less heat, too. Same low end grunt as the 255s, but without any of the issues.

What I like about this setup...ever hear someone waiting for a light next to you when the light turns green, and they let out the clutch, you hear the RPMs drop for a few seconds. There is no drop with these cams; you just torque away effortlessly.

I will second what you are saying except for the part about the change from stock as I never rode mine stock. Picked the bike up from the Stealer with the 254e cams which came in the SE kit including Tuner&HD Clutch, V&H Power Duals and a free flowing filter. Just the canned tune the Dealer did to it originally but never any complaints about how it runs......BUT...

Not wanting to leave well enough alone I'm thinking of putting in a 107 kit with some 10:1 pistons and wondering how they will play with the 254e cams?

Wow; how time flies! With all due respect to those happy with their 254E cams; I wasn't...or my V&H Big Radius 2-1. Now running S&S 583 E-Z starts and an RB 2-1; torque is at 100ft lbs and starting in any situation is as simple as pushing the button; there was an occasional hot start issue and I've been down that road before...also ditched the V&H tuner and went with an SEPST. Excellent 2 lane touring bike now...
