After 40 Years of Riding I "hung 'em up" Today.

Thanks for your personal thoughts, I took them seriously. Laura and I are now starting to ride again after a few mishaps on bikes over the last few years (I was backing off from riding and she was ready to go)...but we are loving it again. between the 2 new bikes I have owned in the last 7 weeks (one was given back) we posted 2900 miles of local riding...Good fortunes to you Lencap.

Thanks so much for your insight. You are so right about the future. Beast and I have put off getting another bike for years. We have so many other things we do, there's time for it later, etc. Well, a cancer diagnosis and surviving some serious side effects made us both realize the future isn't a guarantee. He bought my Fat Boy as soon as he got out of the hospital and last weekend we found him a '95 WG to tinker with while he recovers. I can't wait for him to get on the road with me!
I hope you'll stick around, with or without a bike. We all need you and your years of experience! I learn something from all the experienced riders every time I come here, so Thank YOU for all you've already taught us.

Thanks to all for the kind thoughts. It wouldn't surprise me to find another bike in my garage come the spring, but then again it wouldn't surprise me if today really was the last ride on "my" Harley.
By the way there is a #5 I should have posted:
5) Ride in the rain. Can't tell you how much I learned by riding in the rain, but it was a lot. As long as I had on the right gear I actually liked the rain. After 30 minutes of rain the goo on the road is pretty much washed away, and the road oils are diluted to the point of not creating a possibly slick surface. And there is nothing that smells better than fresh springtime air after a thunderstorm. I'll never forget the double rainbow over the Blue Ridge mountains just before sunset. The perfect ride, and I almost missed it because it was raining. Morale: Every day is a chance to ride. The only thing that held me back was a lack of skill or experience. Easily remedied and the payoff is an entirely new world of experiences. I also learned that it's legal to ride a Harley that hasn't been washed and waxed!
