Let's see if I got this right...you were coming up on another bike, someone you didn't know and a patched MC member, approaching an intersection and slowing for a traffic light (I'm assuming, maybe incorrectly, that you were in the right hand lane). You fell in to the right of the other bike in the lane. When the light changed you accelerated past the bike on the right?

Not only not conforming to etiquette, but also not cool, and, I believe, illegal in your state to share a lane or ride two-abreast, or definitely passing to the right of another vehicle while sharing a lane (unless that vehicle is stopped, signalling, and making a LH turn, and then you may want to check your state laws regarding that). Don't be in a rush. Riders become dead when they get in a rush. What was wrong with falling behind and making the pass conventionally when it was safe and clear to do so?

Not preachin' or judgin' ya bro...you asked.

That was his lane, not yours.

+ 1 Best...pass on the left like you would a cager.

This sentence above may be the etiquette.

FWIW Yes, a pass on the right would startle me if I was not aware of my surrounds.

There's a reason it's generally illegal to pass on the right...because it's dangerous...

In my home state of MN, it is illegal to share a lane with another motorcycle unless both riders consent (ie riding together). Passing another bike in the same lane qualifies as sharing a lane. A big No No.

We live and learn.

We still live because we have learned ....just in time.
