1 of only 2 covered bridges left in NC. A cool place on a beautiful day.

Can someone explain the reason if any for having a covered bridge as opposed to just a bridge as in the pics .... Dont have these in England always intrigued me

The only reason I can think of is that exposed wood will rot faster than covered wood.
